Germany 1 (biggest selling music CD)*
Switzerland 1

* a note from Mike Batt: "A crazy new rule introduced
by the German chart compilers has allowed a comedy
DVD with no music content, by Mario Barth, to draw
attention from the fact that Katie Melua's new album
'Pictures' has shot into the number 1 position of
all music CDs this week. Melua's album is listed as
'number 2' whereas it is the biggest selling CD in
the country."

Katie Melua talks about the 'split' with Mike Batt
'Mike and I are not 'splitting
up' - this story has been blown out of all proportion!!
When Mike and I started working together I was fresh
out of school and he had been songwriting for 40 years.
We always had a plan that as time went on, and I learnt
more and more, Mike would take more of a back seat
with regards to the writing and producing and I would
be writing more on my own, or with other songwriters.
I wrote with two other writers on the new album, Pictures,
which was a new experience for me but one which was
enjoyable and successful I believe. Both Mike and
I feel that as and when I start work on the next album
Mike's involvement will be as my manager and the executive
producer, rather than hands on in the studio and writing
the songs. Mike has dedicated the last 4 years to
my career and I'm sure he has other stuff that he
wants to do that is nothing to do with me!
Mike is my manager and chairman of Dramatico, the
record company that I am signed to. We have a very
strong working relationship, one that I am proud of
and one that allows me to develop as an artist in
my own time and in my own way.
Reacting to claims that Katie said that collaborations
with Mike on her first album were crap Katie says:
'What I actually said was that I have been learning
all the time, that when I first started writing I
would think a song I'd written was great and I'd hope
that it would be on the album, but that in hindsight
it was crap and I am glad that I listened to people
around me. Those 'crap' songs never saw the light
of day, thank God!'

Katie on Radio Times cover!
Katie
Melua is one of a selection of Live Earth artists
featured on special editions of this week's UK Radio
Times magazine. She is interviewed about the event
inside, here's an excerpt:
How
important is Live Earth to you?
'I
really don't want it to be about playing some gig;
it's mainly about what happens after. I love how musicians
have the power to influence so many, not only our
generation but the next generation as well, who'll
continue looking after the planet.'
Written
any 'green' songs recently?
'The
thing is, I don't want to sound like a preacher. But
I might be inspired to write something that's more
influenced by the love of nature, like about a forest
or the sea. What I find frustrating is how the campaign
[against global warming] is motivated by fear; that
the world's going to end if we don't act, whereas
I think we should be acting on our appreciation of
this incredible planet.'
The
Live Earth concerts take place on 7th July; Katie
is appearing at the Hamburg event. Stage times are
still to be announced, watch this space!

a short film about the photo shoot here.

Katie Joins Hearing Loss Warning Campaign
Katie
Melua is supporting The Royal National Institute for
the Deaf's 'Don't Lose the Music' campaign, which
is warning that loud music in pubs and clubs is leading
to a hearing loss "time bomb". The RNID
found that the hearing of about 70% of people who
visited nightclubs was affected. The study also found
loud music damaged the ears of nearly 50% of pub goers.
Delia
Henry, director of RNID Scotland, said it was time
for action. "We're all familiar with messages
about practising safe sex and using sun cream - but
the lack of any guidance on loud music means this
generation of music lovers could be facing a hearing
loss time bomb.
"Our
research shows most young people have experienced
the first signs of permanent hearing damage after
a night out, yet have no idea how to prevent it.
"With
regular exposure to music at high volumes in clubs,
gigs and bars, it's only too easy to clock up noise
doses that could damage their hearing forever."

Multi-platinum Melua Heads Impala Honors
(from
Billboard.biz)
U.K.-based
singer-songwriter Katie Melua's sophomore album "Piece
By Piece" album leads off a new batch of European
sales awards from Brussels-based pan-European independent
labels body Impala.
"Piece
by Piece," released September 2005 on U.K. indie
Dramatico, has scored a "multi-platinum"
award recognizing shipments across Europe in excess
of 3.5 million units. It heads a list of more than
30 awards covering the last six months.
Impala
inaugurated the awards late last year (Billboard.biz
November 15, 2006) to recognise independent trade
shipments, including download sales, across Europe.
Labels nominate recordings to Impala, promising to
supply the body with independently verifiable physical
shipments data on request.
In
a statement, Katie Melua stated: "I've always
been happy that my music is released on an independent
label, and to have Impala recognise our work is truly
thrilling."
Alison
Wenham, chairman and chief executive of the Association
of Independent Music (AIM) added: "The Impala
Awards are to recognise, and to thank, the artists
and the record companies who produce such great music.
They help spread the word across Europe, and promote
the grass roots of the indie sector as well as the
international stars independent companies regularly
produce."

Katie Melua signs her 10 foot Gibson Les Paul
for Gibson Guitartown
Katie
Melua took time out to sign her 10 foot Gibson Les
Paul replica guitar for Gibson Guitartown London.
The guitar titled 'Guitar Man' was hand painted by
community visual artist Alex Machin (pictured) who
also joined Katie to sign the guitar.
Katie
Melua said 'I love the design of my guitar and hope
that it will raise a lot of money for The Princes
Trust, Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy and Teenage Cancer
Trust.'
The
10 foot fiber glass free standing guitar will form
part of the Gibson Guitartown London charity campaign
and be displayed publicly at More London by Tower
Bridge, London SE1 from June 25th for ten weeks. Following
the display, Katie Melua's signed Les Paul guitar
will be auctioned off to raise money for The Prince's
Trust, Teenage Cancer Trust and Nordoff-Robbins Music
Therapy at an event in October.

Recording Update
The
recording of Katie's forthcoming third album continues
apace…
Brass
sections have been recorded at Dramatico's studios
and this week saw the recording entourage travel to
Dublin where The Irish Film Orchestra (used on both
previous albums) added strings to six tracks.
The
recording has also yielded an as-yet unnamed Prince
cover version, which may or may not make it onto the
album. The Minneapolis Maestro has performed 'Nine
Million Bicycles' several times on stage, and is a
huge fan.
Mike
Batt: 'He invited us to his 'secret' London gig last
month at Koko in Camden, so we thought we'd return
the compliment. We also met him the next day when
he invited us to a private charity gig he was doing.
He seemed very nice. I've had this Prince song kicking
about in my head for years; not one of his better
known ones."
The
album is currently still on schedule for a September
release. There's no word on a title or any other song
details yet, but a new photo session for the sleeve
and press shots has been scheduled, so things are
motoring along in the background…!

Concert Under The Sea - The Documentary Film
Dramatico
is pround to announce the release of a new DVD on
May 28th 2007.
Katie
Melua: Concert Under The Sea - The Documentary Film
was shot in and off the coast of Norway, and tells
the story of Katie setting the Guinness World Record
for the deepest underwater concert ever performed,
303 metres below the sea. Invited by Statoil, the
gas drilling company, to celebrate their 10th anniversary
on the biggest man-made structure ever moved on Earth,
Katie (after checking their environmental record)
agreed to perform on the North Sea floor at the foot
of a leg of the enormous drilling platform.
The
story of Katie and her band¹s rigorous safety
training, and the realisation of the dream of the
gas platform manager who conceived the whole crazy
idea, is the subject of this fascinating film. Towards
the end of the film we witness some of the concert
itself.
Extras:
Katie: The Next Steps (30 minutes) - A Documentary
Style View of Katie on Tour
Additional to the film of Katie's undersea concert
is a new interview describing the adventure, and containing
previously unreleased footage of her on tour and from
her daily life.
'It¹s Only Pain' - The Video. (Plus photo montage
by Jo De Banzie)
The previously unavailable promotional video of 'It¹s
Only Pain', shot at the derelict theatre at Alexandra
Palace, together with a beautiful montage of shots

the chance to win signed Katie goodies ~ this year's
target is £500, it's currently up to £346
so if you haven't taken part yet please help us make
this the best yet!
Organised
by MelvilleB on the forum, there's a weekly poll to
vote for your favourite Katie song from a choice of
ten. The winning songs go into a final poll, and the
most popular of these will have their sheet music
signed by Katie and offered as prizes in The Choice
Is Yours Raffle, to be drawn on April 17th. For more
details, visit the forum now!

As we all know, there are nine million bicycles in
Beijing. That's a fact. But our distance from the
edge of the known universe has, until now, remained
a guess. But guess no longer!

Plans for 2007
Happy
New Year!
Well,
we ended 2006 on something of a high; a great performance
on Duet Impossible, Katie confirmed as the highest
selling European female artist throughout Europe,
and Piece By Piece album sales topping the incredible
figures of Call Off The Search.
2007 looks set to be another busy year for Katie;
the first few months are given over to writing and
recording the third album. The album is scheduled
to be recorded from April to June and the plan at
the moment is to release it around September time.
We're also looking at a possible DVD release, details
of which are still very much in the planning stages.
In the meantime, the soundtrack to the Rene Zellweger
and Ewan McGregor film 'Miss Potter' is released by
Dramatico on Monday 8th January, featuring the exclusive
Katie Melua recording 'When You Taught Me How To Dance'
as well as the film's original score by Nigel Westlake.
